At the end of February, Google announced that it was updating its search algorithm to serve higher-quality results to searchers. The update has since been dubbed the "Farmer Update" due to the algorithm's new bias against what Google considers "sites which are low-value add for users, copy content from other websites or sites that are just not very useful." Translation: if you own www.how-to-rank-better-by-reading-these-articles-i-stole.com, things aren't going to be looking as peachy-keen as they may have been beforehand!

Correlation Data for SEO and Social Media Analysis - Part 1 - Whiteboard Friday
One of the most helpful aids in doing SEO is knowing what factors actually affect your rankings. It seems obvious on its face, but not everyone prioritizes their SEO work with the knowledge of how changes to a site and link profile actually affect the SERPs. It's important to at least have some heuristics to use in pursuit of higher rankings, and while it's not always easy, it is possible to correlate optimization techniques with positive (or negative) movement in SERPs.
SEOmoz tries to establish these correlations in our bi-annual Search Engine Ranking Factors project by running tests and consulting with professional SEOs; for instance, in 2009, we discovered that keyword-focused anchor text from external links was highly correlated with positive rankings (we're currently working on a new iteration of the report for 2011, so keep your eyes peeled!). As you probably know, and as Rand spends a little time explaining in this week's Whiteboard Friday, correlation is not causation. That being said, correlations are still important and useful information! In today's post, Rand begins a two-part series on how to use correlation data in your SEO and social media research.

This time around, Google has - among other things - improved their ability to detect scraper sites and banish them from the SERPs. Of course, the Panda updates are changes to Google's algorithm and are not merely manual reviews of sites in the index, so there is room for error (causing devastation for many legitimate webmasters and SEOs).

Sure, PageRank is older than Emperor Palpatine, but a lot of SEOs still use it as their primary metric for link research and rankability. Unfortunately, using PageRank exclusively to measure progress and page value can yield results as ugly as the Emperor's face. Since Google updates PageRank so sporadically, you may not get an accurate picture of a page's actual value. That being said, Google updated PageRank late June and a lot of SEOs are talking about it! What does the Campaign Settings section show me?
The tab shows the current settings for any given campaign, and enables you to changes things such as; name of campaign, competitors tracked, and which email notifications you receive from SEOmoz.
Can I change the domain for my campaign?
No. To track a separate domain you have to create a new campaign. If you are at your max number of campaigns you can archive or delete a current campaign and free up a spot.
What does it mean to archive a campaign?
If you archive a campaign this means that we are holding onto all of the past data for the domain, but no longer collecting new data. If you end up restablishing an archived campaign there will be a gap in data collection but you will not have lost the past data associated with the domain. Archived campaigns do not count towards your total number of campaigns - the campaign limit only applies to active campaigns.

Link building outreach can be really difficult and unpleasant. I've always hated the tactic of emailing site owners and asking for links; it feels awkward, doesn't work very well, and requires a lot of time and effort. One of my favorite things about our modern world is that with social media, it's possible to form real relationships with people you don't already know. By the time you ask for a link or a share, you're not just some creeper just emailing out of the blue asking for a favor; you're viewed a friend whom they trust to provide value and not spam them.
I recently spoke at PubCon Las Vegas about my tactics for finding link targets online and building relationships with them using my favorite social media platform, Twitter. This is a strategy that I've been able to use in the past to completely replace sending "link ask" emails. For my very first-ever Whiteboard Friday, I want to share these tactics and the tools I use to do them with you! This is a strategy that takes some time and effort to set up and execute, but it can result in a set of social connections you can use to get links and promote your content again and again. Please pardon my occasional coughing - cold season has really hit the Mozplex hard this year.
